COMMUNITY

Since CROPS received a Rural Health Network Planning Grant from HRSA in 2007 several new groups have formed which have resulted in a high involvement of the local community. These groups and their respective roles in the process are described below:

Committees and Advisors

Rural Health Network Planning Grant
Leadership committee formed that is comprised of 18 individuals who represent local nonprofits, health care providers, higher education, and local residents to identify needs and plan activities. The group meets monthly to identify health care needs of the target population and plan activities that address unmet needs.

San Pierre Revitalization Project
Leadership committee comprised of 3 adult leaders and 3 youth leaders. The group meets quarterly and helps to plan and coordinate activities such as the implementation of service learning projects, distribution of surveys, coordination of town meetings, and orchestration of community health fairs and other events.

Youth Leadership
Leadership committee comprised of 20 youth who are implementing a model youth-led rural development project in San Pierre called “Growing Rural.” The model is similar to that of Habitat for Humanity, but instead of adult volunteers working with economically disadvantaged families to build homes, inner city youth are working alongside local rural youth to rebuild an entire town. The group includes 10 inner city youth partners and 10 local youth leaders that work collaboratively on service learning projects during the summer months. Currently the youth are publishing a How to Manual and Video Documentary to share their successes with other rural communities.

Sandhill Crane Bikeway Systems Trail
Project committee comprised of 10 local advisory leaders involved in developing a 44.5 mile bikeway system that begins in San Pierre to increase physical fitness and recreational opportunities for the area. The Sandhill Crane Bikeway Systems Trail Project was planned in direct response to community needs assessments which identified a lack of recreational opportunities as a significant problem for the target population. This project will also uniquely address a number of health problems identified for the target population such as obesity, lack of flexibility, and high blood pressure.

Local, Regional, State and National Government Participation and Support

Local participation includes Kay Chaffins, Railroad Township Trustee, who serves on the San Pierre Revitalization Committee, and the Starke County Commissioners who served as a project partner and fiscal agent for the Comprehensive Master Plan.

Regional participation includes the Kankakee Iroquois Regional Planning Commission that served as grant administrator for the Comprehensive Master Plan.

State participation includes Senator Ed Charbonneau who actively participates as a member of the CROPS Rural Health Planning Committee, attending meetings on a monthly basis; Tammy Chadd of the Indiana State Department of Health, State Office of Rural Health who also serves on the CROPS Rural Health Planning Committee and attends meetings regularly via teleconference; and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs that provides technical assistance, training and grant opportunities. Nancy Dembowski, State Representative, participated in the health fair and provides letters of support for CROPS projects. The Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana Department of Natural Resources participated in the planning of the Sandhill Crane Bikeway System, which will provide recreational opportunities to the target population.

National partners in the project include US Congressman Joe Donnelly, US Senator Evan Bayh, and US Senator Richard Lugar who have all provided letters of support for numerous projects, and the US Department of Agriculture, that is working with CROPS to provide funding for park upgrades, recreational facilities, and a community wellness center.
